Hi! I am

Armağan Karahanoğlu

a design researcher who works on human-centred experience design of personal health technologies.

Currently, I am an assistant professor of Interaction Design at the University of Twente in the Netherlands.

Are you interested in collaborating or working with me or just having a chat about your research? Feel free to reach out to me via a.karahanoglu(at)utwente.nl

About me

Research in design of human-centered personal health technology experiences is my passion.

I have an Industrial Design background. I have a PhD degree from Middle East Technical University (METU) of Turkey. I worked as a researcher at METU, Department of Industrial Design and Product Usability Testing Unit (UTEST) for several years. During my PhD, I was granted the prestigious Fulbright PhD Student Scholarship, and I studied at Carnegie Mellon University, Human-Computer Interaction Institute (USA).

I also worked as an assistant professor at TOBB University of Economics and Technology (Ankara, Turkey). There, I was granted two TUBITAK (Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey) research funding.

Recent Research News

📣 I am one of the organisers of NordiCHI2024 workshop entitled “Life in Transitions: The Role of Technology in Supporting Well-being in the Heart of Change“. The goal of this workshop is to bring the NordiCHI community together to discuss and map out the role of interactive technology in life transitions. We are looking for contributions to be part of this workshop. The deadline is 20 September 2024. Submissions will be accepted for consideration after October 6 2024 in case particular interest is raised. We look forward to seeing you in Uppsala on 13 October 2024!

📣 We received a Pioneers in Health Care (PIHC) voucher (€65K) in 2024. This project aims to expand our research about the use of activities of daily living in stroke rehabilitation. Earlier, collaborating with clinicians and stroke patients, we have innovatively integrated hand exercises into everyday objects like toothbrushes and coffee cups for seamless at-home rehabilitation. In this project, we will take these efforts one step further and evaluate if and how this approach significantly increases training time compared to traditional methods.

📣 I received NWO-Social Sciences and Humanities Open Competition (XS) (€49K) personal grant in 2023. This project aims to understand the extent and limits of human trust in human-technology partnerships during shared health decision-making. The goal of the project is to identify ways of empowering individuals and society to make informed health decisions to enhance human autonomy in such human-technology partnerships.
